Sharpening Skates

Sharpening your skates - Sharpen a new pair of skates before you skate on them. - Use a good skate-sharpening company (ask a professional coach for advice) and remember, just because they can sharpen hockey skates good doesn't mean they can sharpen figure skates good, and vice-versa. - Re-sharpen skates after approximately 20-30 hours of skating (depending on usage and care). - In figure skates the bottom pick should NOT be removed. The pick is part of the design of figure skates and is essential to proper balance. - Inspect your skates after they are sharpened to ensure you have a quality edge. What to look for in a proper sharpening 1. There are two edges on your blade, with a proper sharpening these edges should be equal. 2. Figure skates should have a flatter edge than hockey skates, a figure skating blade should not be rounded off at the end. 3. Figure skates should have all the original toe picks. the bottom one should be pointing downward, it should just barely touch when the blade is stood up on a flat surface. To check to see if your blades need to be sharpened, scrap your nail on each side of the blade, if no shavings come off, your blades need to be sharpened.
